It’s a common problem on allotments – where do you go to the toilet if you’re caught short?
Over the last decade or so, allotments have changed. With a new mix and diversity of people, it’s a very different place from the old days of it being the stereotypical domain of grumpy old men in flat caps!
But where the old guys would often take a leak behind their shed or in the hedge, women, children and people with reduced mobility just can’t do that, and as such, often felt excluded from allotments, losing out on the physical and mental health benefits, as well as the sheer joy of growing some of your own food.
But the advent of modern compost toilets means it’s now more affordable than ever to have a simple-to-use toilet that’s available for everyone to access.
Cliff Road Allotment Association in Wilmslow had this very dilemma – they tried to provide facilities through an old caravan style chemical toilet, but it needed emptying so often, smelled of chemicals and simply wasn’t up to the job.
Then they saw the Separett Villa 9010 waterless compost toilet advertised in an allotment magazine, and with a donation from Manchester Airport’s community fund, they purchased one directly from WooWoo Waterless toilets.
Additionally, they obtained a suitable solar panel and battery, along with the timber needed to make a spectacular building to house it all.
The site manager, Joe Stephenson, told us that it took him (with help from other allotmenteers who freely gave their time and skills) around three weeks to construct the building and install the Separett Villa waterless compost toilet.
Joe commented: “Installation (of the Separett Villa) was quite straightforward and presented no problems”.
Asked how they’ve got on with it, he said: “Since opening, it has been incredibly well-received by women plotholders and wheelchair users”.
We think Joe and the allotmenteers at Cliff Road Allotment Association deserve hearty congratulations for creating a stunning off-grid waterless, compost toilet that’s accessible to all.
